Tour of Scotland
July 15 - 27, 2009

nesday July 15 - depart the US for overnight flight to Scotland. Details to be announced.

Thursday July 16 - arrive at Glasgow airport. Panoramic city tour of Glasgow, former UK city of Architecture and Design. Visit Saint Mungo's Museum of Religious Life and Art and the Glasgow School of Art, regarded at Charles Rennie Mackintosh's architectural masterpiece. Dinner and overnight in Glasgow.

Friday July 17 - a visit to Inveraray Castle on Loch Fyne, home of the Duke of Argyll, which contains portraits by Gainsborough, Ramsay and Raeburn. Enjoy some of Scotland's most spectacular scenery en route to Stirling Castle, visiting the splendid Royal Palace of King James V and Chapel Royal where Mary Queen of Scots was crowned in 1543. Return to Glasgow via the Antonine Wall, built in the first century by the Romans. Dinner and overnight in Glasgow.

Saturday July 18 - travel south to visit the 15th century Culzean Castle associated with the Kennedy family since the 14th century. Continue to Newton Stewart, the seat of the Chief of Clan Dunbar. Stop in Wigtown, Scotland's National Book Town and Whithorn, the location of the first recorded church in Scotland. Dinner and overnight in Dumfries.

Sunday July 19 - travel to Carlisle castle which is over 900 years old. At Heyshame, take the ferry to the Isle of Man where the earliest beginnings of the Dunbar Clan came to be. The island itself came into the possession of the Earls of Dunbar as part of the Dowry of Black Angnes Randolph, who married the 9th Earl. Castletown is said to contain some Cospatrick Dunbar graves. The Clan Dunbar descends from Gospatrick, grandson of Crinan the Thane and Seneschal of the Isles and nephew to King Duncan I of Scotland. Dinner and overnight on the Isle of Man.

Monday July 20 - discover the Manx Stone Cross Collection dating back to the 6th century AD when crosses served as grave markers and memorial stones. To date, 204 decorated stones have been found, representing the largest concentration of such stones for this period. Many remain in churches and churchyard 'cross shelters'. Cast copies of the stones are kept at the Manx Museum. We will take time to explore other parts of the island before dinner and overnight on the Isle of Man.

Tuesday July 21 - Leave the Isle of Man and stop at Kirby Lonsdale situated in the southeastern corner of the County of Cumbria in the Lake District, to discover Ruskin's View and Devil's Bridge, painted by Turner in 1833. Passing by the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, we stop at Penrith Castle, built between 1399 ad 1470, before reaching Durham for a visit to its Norman Cathedral, which contains the remains of St. Cuthbert the Venerable Bede. Dinner and overnight in Durham.

Wednesday July 22 - out first stop is Melrose Abbey founded in 1136 be Cistercian monks, followed by a visit to Jedburgh Abbey, where several members of the Dunbar Clan are buried. In the afternoon we visit Rosslyn Chapel which has associations with the Knights Templars and is featured in the Da Vinci Code. Dinner and overnight in Haddington.

Thursday July 23 - travel to the town of Dunbar on the North Sea coast of East Lothian, to visit the birthplace of John Muir, the explorer and nationalist who created the national park system in the USA. His birthplace is now a stunning interpretative centre highlighting his work. In the afternoon, we visit the Tamtallon Castle, surrounded by cliffs and offering stunning views to the sea-bird colony on Bass Rock. Return to Haddington for dinner and overnight.

Friday July 24 - return to Dunbar for a walking tour and Clan Dunbar AGM and luncheon. In the afternoon we visit the local Bellhaven Brewery or discover Dunbar on your own before returning to Haddington for dinner and overnight.

Saturday July 25 - transfer by coach to Edinburgh where you will be free to enjoy the many sights of interest in the city or attend. The Gathering, which consists of Highland Games in Holyrood Park, followed by a Clan March to the Castle and a Pageant on the esplanade of the Castle. (Please note the tickets for the Gathering are additional and can be ordered when making your deposit.) For those who wish, we will continue to Dunfermline Abbey, founded  by Queen Margaret, wife of Malcolm Canmore. Robert the Bruce is buried in the church. (Cost of Entry to the Abbey additional) Return to Edinburgh for the afternoon and evening. Tonight dinner is on your own in the city with many restaurants or pubs to choose from. Coach transfer later in the evening to Haddington for overnight.

Sunday July 26 - the coach will take everyone into Edinburgh for a free day to enjoy the city or the Gathering. Late afternoon/early transfer to Haddington for a farewell dinner and overnight.

Monday July 27 - after fond farewell, we transfer to Glasgow airport for the return flight to the USA.
